I have noticed that this is an issue that we find very often at gatherings of turtle enthusiasts or in internet forums. That's why I created this sheet to explain quickly and clearly the method we use to determine the approximate age of a turtle.
Explanation:
You should know that when the turtles are born they have plenty of small smooth scales on their back (vertebrae, ribs, marginal ....) Each year the turtle grows and its scales as well. And so little markings also form on the shell, called striations, which indicate the turtle’s growth that year.
So, be aware that ''Mediterranean'' land turtles, like aquatic turtles, have a stripe on its shell scales that mark its annual growth. So just count the number of streaks for the approximate age of the turtle (It is advisable to count the stripes on the vertebral scales to be more precise).
